Bio
Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Gregory spent the majority of his commercial career based in Chicago working with architects, interior designers, and corporate art consulting firms, creating art for public and commercial spaces. Gregory also ran an 8 year long interactive mural program for Blue Moon Brewing Co., where he brought art to the masses, traveling throughout the U.S. creating murals at music, culinary, and craft beer festivals in major cities and beyond.
Throughout his career as a commercial artist and muralist, Gregory has always experimented with his fine art mostly behind the scenes, occasionally taking part in group exhibitions, auctions and commissions. He has always considered his fine art an integral aspect of his life. Having reached a place of clarity in his painting, along with a drive to create purely from within himself, his primary focus now lies within that realm.
Gregory earned a BFA from The Columbus College of Art & Design. He currently resides in Austin Texas.
Statement
"I have a preoccupation with the field of energy that connects us, and all of the universe. My process is largely an attempt to interact with, and translate higher frequencies of being, visually, from my unique perspective.
I wrestle with the balance between states of anxiety and of meditative bliss, but with the hope of achieving a sort of rhythmic dance between the two in my work. My process, as I see it, is a sort of meditation and catharsis, and is as much the point of the work as the end product. A goal of mine is for viewers to feel a sense of balance and movement, inspiration and peace.
Allowing time and space for each painting to unfold organically, I rely mostly on my instinct and memories of forms from natural and man-made environments. Every added mark or shape informs the next. This process can manifest quickly, but more commonly will take many hours.
I wait and watch for signs, often staring until the way forward reveals itself. As a “way in” sometimes I’ll force the issue, by introducing a field of color, texture or shape just to have something to play off of.
From that place, a dialogue begins, and I never know the outcome until it reaches a satisfactory resolution, but rarely, if ever, a conclusion.”
